I used to be a firm believer in profession. By this I mean I tended to seek professional advice from an authority whenever in doubt. I believed there was always someone who had the ultimate truth to reveal. So the only thing I needed to do to solve a problem was to find the right person and then follow her/his advice.
That was basically the rationale that prompted me to opt for a sports store over a street vendor when I tried to get walking sticks for my parents. Knowing the cost was probably much higher, I was not at all hesitant and more than willing when I paid more than NTD$400 for one stick in the store, because I thought the stick would support its user better. But I was totally speechless when I realized my mom had also bought one in the same brand for NTD$200. The only difference between the two sticks: she bought it from a street vendor.
From then on, good judgment certainly weighs as much, if not more, as professional advice does to me.
